Mars Science Laboratory Robotic Arm
نویسنده
چکیده
The Mars Science Laboratory Robotic Arm (MSL RA) is a critical, single–fault-tolerant mechanism in the MSL science mission that must deliver 5 of the rover’s 12 science instruments to the Martian surface. This paper will describe the design, build, and test methodology which evolved as the science payload matured over the course of the 4-year project. Lessons learned based on the EM and Flight unit testing will also be discussed.

Wavelet-Based Image Compression for the Mars Exploration Rovers
In early 2004, the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission will land a pair of rovers on Mars and operate each of them for 90 Martian days. Each rover is equipped with an unprecedented nine visible-wavelength cameras: a mast-mounted, high-angular-resolution color imager for science investigations (the panoramic camera, or Pancam); a mastmounted, medium-angular-resolution camera for navigation purp...
متن کاملDexterous robotic sampling for Mars in-situ science
Robotic exploration of the Martian surface will provide important scientific data on planetary climate, life history, and geologic resources. In particular, robotic arms will assist in the detailed visual inspection, instrumented analysis, extraction, and earth return of soil and rock samples. To this end, we are developing new robotic manipulation concepts for use on landers and rovers, wherei...
متن کاملThe Mars Science Laboratory Engineering Cameras
NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Rover is equipped with a set of 12 engineering cameras. These cameras are build-to-print copies of the Mars Exploration Rover cameras described in Maki et al. (J. Geophys. Res. 108(E12): 8071, 2003). Images returned from the engineering cameras will be used to navigate the rover on the Martian surface, deploy the rover robotic arm, and ingest samples into th...
متن کاملRobotics Challenges for Robotic and Human Mars Exploration
Infrastructure support for robotic colonies, Mars habitat for humans, and/or robotic exploration of planetary surfaces will need to rely on the field deployment of multiple robust robots. This support includes such tasks as the deployment and servicing of power systems and in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) generators, establishing long-life robotic science stations for measurement and communi...
متن کاملMars Exploration Rover Performance as a Baseline for Flight Rover Autonomy Technology Assessment
Technology assessments rely on performance metrics to establish a basis for rating technologies. Metrics are also used to measure relative merit of similar technologies to state-of-the-art technology. Functional performance metrics are presented for mobility and robotic arm autonomy exercised on the NASA Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) surface mission thus far. The metrics are used to apply an ex...
